Diner 741 Restoration Update - October 2004
 |
741 at Midwest Locomotive
- 10/04 |
Midwest Locomotive has been aggressively working on Diner 741. The old
roof has been completely cleaned down to bare metal, and they expect to
start installing new metal within a week. The old canvas and inches of
tar have finally been removed. The curved sides added during the modernization
have been removed, and will need to be replaced. The original roof looks
to be in good shape. The air conditioner hatch had to be removed, as it
was completely rusted out.
The new metal installation will be done carefully, to avoid setting any
of the horsehair insulation on fire. Most of this insulation has been
removed, however. The new curved roof panels from the side sheets to the
top of the original roof will have to seal the car from water entering
this area, and down the side sheets. This work will be very critical.
This area of the car is very important to the restoration. When the Erie
originally modernized the car in 1949, they cut into the side sheets,
which allowed water to enter from the rusted curved roof panels
